Mixed

During the program I learned a lot and was able to deepen quite a bit. As a speech therapist, however, I think specialties like phonetics and phonology aren't really considered enough — these areas can also support a person with dyslexia (I speak from personal experience). I also missed scientific topics on dyslexia, like findings from neurology, neurolinguistics, and corresponding studies. In practical terms I was able to benefit quite a lot and could put the various tips for practical work to good use. For the future I'd love to see the (natural) scientific part get a bit more attention. In recent years some very interesting studies on dyslexia have been published that could potentially give new input for the pedagogical support of children, teens, and adults. The program isn't particularly dyslexia-friendly itself — there's a lot to read and write. Maybe in the future you could also work with video and audio.

Dyslexia Trainer Certificate Program responded:
Thank you for your feedback! As you correctly note, dyslexic students may sometimes additionally need professional speech therapy support. However, speech therapy falls within the area of responsibility of speech therapists and not dyslexia trainers, who work on a pedagogical-didactic level. The certified dyslexia trainer is a complement to, not a substitute for, medical or therapeutic professions.

Practical part could be developed further

The theoretical preparation is good, but for the practical part — the actual work with children — I felt inadequately prepared.

distance program — comfortably from home and flexible in time

the afs method is very open and allows the combination of several different, complementary training methods. in my daily work as a dyslexia and dyscalculia trainer i can always respond individually to each client; there are no rigid, pre-set lesson plans (as with some other training methods). every day, every training session is different — and that's appealing not just to the children and teens but also to me, the trainer!

Review of the dyslexia distance course

I give the program only three out of five possible stars, because in both the module materials and the listed required readings the same content is repeated again and again. I find that tedious as a student and don't think it's necessary. ONE precise module presentation would be preferable. Theory is good, practice is better (more important). Unfortunately, despite my pedagogy degree and the module materials, I didn't feel sufficiently prepared for my first sessions. I would have hoped for more practical tips. Still, I'm glad I did the dyslexia program and am already looking forward to working with more children.

Dyslexia Trainer Certificate Program responded:
We are very sorry that you found the repetition of core content for reinforcing the learning material distracting. However, our nearly 20 years of training experience has shown that the repetition of certain content is very important for most participants, as they only become fully aware of the connections through it.

Warm regards,
Your Dyslexia Trainer Certificate Program Team
